How to Store Wine at Home (Even Without a Cellar)
Share
You don’t need a million-dollar cellar to store wine properly. Whether you’re stocking up by the dozen or just keeping a few bottles on hand, the way you store your wine can make all the difference in taste and longevity.
Here’s how to keep your wine in top shape at home—no fancy setup required.
1. Keep it Cool (But Not Too Cool)
Wine prefers a stable temperature—ideally between 12–16°C. Fluctuations are worse than being slightly too warm. Avoid storing wine in kitchens or near appliances that produce heat.
2. Lay Bottles on Their Side
If your wine has a cork, keep it horizontal. This keeps the cork moist and prevents it from drying out, which could lead to oxidation.
3. Avoid Sunlight
UV light degrades wine over time. Store your bottles in a dark cupboard, wine rack, or a closet. Amber bottles offer some protection, but direct sunlight is still a no-go.
4. Keep It Still
Vibration from heavy appliances or moving bottles too often can disrupt aging. Find a stable space where your wine can rest undisturbed.
5. Don’t Panic Without a Cellar
If you don’t have a wine fridge, no worries. A closet or cool under-stairs nook can work wonders. Even under-bed storage (in a cool room) beats the kitchen counter.
Bonus Tip: Label Everything
If you’re building up a collection, use a label or app to track what you’ve got and when to drink it. This avoids losing track of those bottles you were saving for a special occasion.
